MEET THE ARTIST

Janet Schulz is originally from New Jersey, where she studied and completed a degree in Fine Arts Education. She worked in the commercial art field for many years as a graphic designer, using various mediums in creating her paintings, including pen and ink, oil, acrylics and watercolor. In 1980, she studied portrait painting in oils under Marion Hale Nelson and subsequently received commissions to paint portraits of adults and children. She has had examples of her work appear in national magazines and has created the illustrations for two published children's books. Most recently, her watercolors were featured in Ferenc Mate's The World's Best Sailboats II.

For the past 17 years, Janet has specialized in architectural renderings of residences and commercial structures that are already completed or still in the design phase, and translating architectural plans into watercolor paintings. Her inspiration comes from the feeling or mood of the setting, rather than just the object itself. She has gained a widespread reputation for her watercolor house portraits, having painted the homes of people across the U.S. and in France, England and Switzerland. She has also been commissioned by historic and preservation societies to paint architectural scenes to be offered as originals or reproduced as limited edition prints.

Janet has been connected to Bristol since she moved to Rhode Island in 1975, and has spent many years admiring the historic beauty of this quaint New England town. The extraordinary brilliance of ever-changing light and shadows on the fine architectural details of Bristol’s homes and buildings has always intrigued her. Capturing the purity of this light has been her quest.

This collection of watercolors and prints of Bristol, Rhode Island is offered for the first time. We hope you enjoy it.

Besides her house and boat commissions, Janet is currently working on the illustrations for a children's book scheduled for publishing in 2010, and also watercolors of historic scenery in New Bedford, Massachusetts and Alexandria, Virginia.
